Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress on Tuesday evening cleared the deck for Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to become the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
The parties formalized their alliance as Maharashtra Vikas Agadi before supporting Thackeray to hold the top post in the state.
In his acceptance speech, Thackeray said that addressing the plight of farmers would be a top priority.
“I accept the responsibility given by all of you. I’m not alone, but all of you are with me. What has happened today is real democracy. According to ANI, together we will wipe the tears of farmers in the state. ‘
He also thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi for his party’s support. “I had never dreamed of leading the state. I want to thank Sonia Gandhi and others. We are giving a new direction to the country by trusting each other. ”
NCP chief Sharad Pawar said the three coalition members would meet Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for the claim of forming the government. “Three representatives of the ‘Maha Vikas Samiti’ will meet the Governor today. At the swearing-in ceremony to be held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on December 1,” Pawar was told by ANI.
NCP Maharashtra Chief Jayant Patil proposed Thackeray’s name as the head of Maharashtra Vikas Agadi (MVA) and took over as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Congress MLA Balasaheb Thorat approved the proposal.
Earlier, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde pledged to form Maharashtra Vikas Agadi. Nawab Malik of NCP and Nitin Raut of Congress used it in a meeting of the three parties at a hotel in Mumbai.
NCP activists shouted slogans calling party chief Sharad Pawar “the only tiger in Maharashtra” when he arrived at the Trishul Hotel for a triangular meeting with his daughter Supriya Sule.
Ahead of the meeting, NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said that Pawar has conveyed his desire to make Uddhav Thackeray the chief minister.
The meeting started after the resignation of BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, who left the Chief Minister’s post on the fourth day of his second term.
Fadnavis decided not to face a floor test that was ordered by the Supreme Court for Wednesday. After Fadnavis’s resignation, his deputy Ajit Pawar of NCP also resigned, effectively highlighting BJP’s hopes of winning the trust vote.
