The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday approached the Election Commission at an election rally in Jharkhand seeking action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his “rape in India” remark. BJP leaders accused Gandhi of using rape incidents as a “political weapon” to settle scores with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP women MPs led by Union Minister Smriti Irani met Election Commission officials in the national capital and demanded “serious action possible” against Gandhi for her remarks made on Thursday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday approached the Election Commission at an election rally in Jharkhand seeking action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his “rape in India” remark.
BJP women MPs have approached the Election Commission of India to take stern action against Rahul Gandhi. Mr. Gandhi has used rape as a political weapon to settle scores with Narendra Modi, ”Irani said.
He said, ‘We have told the Election Commission that this is the first time that a political leader has used rape for political imitation. The entire nation looks at this constitutional right (EC) to ensure that the dignity of women is upheld and that politicians who want to use rape as a political weapon are given strict punishment, ”he told the meeting. Later told reporters.
The BJP leader said that the Election Commission is yet to decide whether he will punish Gandhi. “Who has given Rahul Gandhi the right to say that all women are being raped in the country?” Who gave Rahul Gandhi the right to say that every man is a rapist? Who gave Rahul Gandhi the right to tarnish the country’s image for his politics? “He asked.
Election Commission officials have assured the delegation that they will do justice after following proper legal procedures. He said that Rahul Gandhi has made such a blasphemous statement for his political gains.
Several BJP women MPs along with Irani attended her meeting with Election Commission officials. He also submitted a memorandum to the voting body.
Rahul Gandhi has grossly violated the letter and spirit of the Model Code of Conduct. They have caused irreparable injury to the status of women in India, ”his memo reads.
Assembly elections are being held in five phases in Jharkhand. The counting of votes will take place on 23 December.
