Priyanka Gandhi, who is campaigning in eastern Uttar Pradesh, on Friday critiqued the Centre’s many welfare schemes to insist that the half-baked schemes had not touched the lives of people. “It would have been better to have gone for an actor,” the 47-year-old said at a roadshow in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur in Purvanchal region, where the party’s Lalitesh Pati Tripathi is contesting against Apna Dal leader and sitting member of Parliament Anupriya Patel. Her comments come ahead of the seventh and last phase of polling in the Lok Sabha election on Sunday.

“Ab aap samajh lijiye ke apne duniye ke sabse bade abhineta ko apna PM bana diya hai. Isse accha toh aap Amitabh Bachchan ko hi bana dete. Karna toh kisi ne kuch nahi tha aapke liye (You should think that you have voted for the world’s greatest actor as your PM. It would have been better that if you have elected (Bollywood superstar) Amitabh Bachchan. Nobody would have worked for your good anyway),” Priyanka Gandhi said.

The Mirzapur parliamentary constituency is one of the two Lok Sabha seats where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally Apna Dal was successful in the general election in 2014.

The Congress has won five times in Mirzapur, Samajwadi Party four times, Bharatiya Janata Party twice, the last time in 1998, and the Bahujan Samaj Party has also been successful twice since elections held in 1957. The Congress party, once dominant on the Mirzapur seat has not won an election after 1984.

“This election is an election in which we are fighting to save our democracy and our democratic institutions and every citizen must cast his vote responsibly,” she said.
